How to tell if my Dash Cam is recording
When you buy a Nextbase Dash Cam, it automatically records once installed, taking the effort out of protecting yourself when driving. But how can you know if your Dash Cam is recording?
In this guide, we’ll discuss how recording works and how you can ensure you’re recording and capturing footage that could be vital in an insurance claim.
How does Dash Cam recording work?
All Dash Cams are similar but work in slightly different ways. Some automatically record footage whereas with others, recordings have to be manually started.
When you choose a Nextbase Dash Cam, it’s the former. When the Dash Cam is on, it records automatically - it’s completely hassle-free.
Loop Recording is used to make the most of your SD card space. Your footage is broken down into short segments and recorded over unless saved or an incident is detected.
What you’ll see when your Dash Cam is recording
If you're concerned your Dash Cam isn’t recording, your first port of call is to check the Dash Cam screen. You’ll see the view of what your Dash Cam can see.
When the Dash Cam is recording, you’ll see a small red circle at the top left of your screen. Next to this, the duration of your footage will be shown. If you can see this, your Dash Cam is recording.
Additionally, Nextbase Dash Cams have a recording indicator for peace of mind. During recording, a red light will blink showing your camera is active.
Check your footage
If you’re concerned your footage isn’t recording, the best way to check is to see what has been saved after a drive. You can do this on your Dash Cam or by connecting your phone to the cam.
Go to your files to see what has been recorded during your journey. This will be split up into small clips.
Keep in mind that with loop recording, unless your footage is flagged as an incident or manually saved, it will be overwritten. The time it takes to overwrite footage varies depending on your Dash Cam, resolution, SD card size and the footage you’ve previously saved.

Recording in Parking Mode
Parking Mode is an intelligent feature available on Nextbase Series 2 Dash Cams. If movement or a bump is detected, Parking Mode will be activated.
When this happens, your Dash Cam screen will go to a “Parking Mode” display. During this time, a 30 or 45-second clip will be recorded and protected. If further or continued movement is detected, the Dash Camera will record again.
The best way to tell if the cam is recording is to look for the “Parking Mode” display. Here you can let it continue to record or disable the mode.
